About Us

Our Story

We exist only to serve our members

Greater Govan Credit Union is a local, not for profit financial institution. We specialise in providing a great place for savings and loans in our community.

What is a Credit Union?

We are a financial co-operative owned and managed by our members. Anyone wanting to use our services must join the GGCU Credit Union and therefore become a member. Our aim is to encourage saving, offer free financial advice to our members and promote sensible borrowing with low interest loans.

On becoming a member of Greater Govan Credit Union you are agreeing to save at regular intervals i.e. weekly, fortnightly, four weekly or monthly. You can save as little or as much as you like, your savings are called Shares and each share is worth £1. All our member's savings are pooled together in the one big pot and from this we provide Low Cost Loans to members, who pay back into the pot to allow other members to borrow, and so on. GGCU is a Not For Profit Organisation which means that any money left, after all the running costs are met, is paid back to the members in the form of a Dividend. A dividend would be expressed as a % of your Shares and would normally be declared by the Board of Directors on the advice of the independent accountant who must annually audit the accounts of the credit union.

Who runs the Credit Union? You do.

The Credit Union is run by a voluntary board of directors, who have been elected by the membership and trained in all aspects of the credit union. The board have appointed 6 full time and 2 part time staff to ensure the smooth running of the credit union on a daily basis.

History of GGCU Credit Union

Greater Govan Credit Union was founded on the 18th March 1997 by local residents who were concerned about the increasing number of local people experiencing financial exclusion. Their aim was to create a financial co-operative which would encourage saving and offer low interest loans to their members.

After operating from different premises over five years, our current office on 15 Burleigh Street was opened in December 2002, followed by the opening of our Shawlands Branch in 2006.

In 2008, we extended our common bond to include anyone working or living in the G post code area and in October 2009 we merged with Ruchazie, Craigend and Garthamlock Credit Union. The Ruchazie office is on 427 Gartloch Road.

Our active membership is now up to 4000 adult members and 1500 juvenile members.
